If Six Was Nine, Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Napa Valley
“If the sun refused to shine, I don't mind, I don't mind. If the mountains fell in the sea, let it be, it ain't me. Got my own world to live through, and I ain't gonna copy you. Jimi Hendrix, 'Axis: Bold as Love'.
IF SIX WAS NINE is the Estate’s take on a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon varietal wine. However, being from Bordeaux it’s difficult to live with just one variety! So a little Merlot is blended in to help the middle palate and Cabernet Franc to provide just that extra bit of lift.
"Very attractive aromas of blackberry, walnut and flower. Hints of warm stones. Medium to full body, firm tannins and chewy finish. A little austere but the bite gives it a lively edge. Drink or hold."
Robert Parket, The WIne Advocate
"The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon If Six Was Nine is a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Merlot aged 20% in new French oak and the rest in one- and two-year-old barrels. This has a nice, crème de cassis and black raspberry aromatics, medium to full-bodied flavors, good, ripe tannin, a nice textured mouthfeel, excellent purity, richness and length. This wine represents a good value among high-end Napa Cabernet Sauvignons and should drink well for 12-15 or more years."
Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon If Six Was Nine is another excellent effortmade from 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Merlot. It boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as a big, sweet perfume of licorice, cedar and black currants. Medium to full-bodied, rich and textured with graphite and charcoal making an appearance in the flavors, this full throttle, impressive Cabernet can be drunk now and over the next 15 years. Time to turn on the music.”
"A brooding Cabernet full of green and black olive, velvety cassis and cinnamon spice, this is ready to enjoy now. A juicy red, it has resolved tannins and a lingering taste of tobacco. Power and finesse are here, along with smoky minerality and savory fruit." — V.B

"Medium-full, black fruit in the nose, balance of voluptuousness and structure. There are a lot of Cabs not this good at nearly twice the price out there right now. Solid.”

"How can anyone not like a wine named after a Jimi Hendrix number? Produced from 100% Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, this cassis, earth, mocha and vanilla scented wine, priced to retail at $40, offers value in the expensive, over crowded, Cabernet Sauvignon category.”
"Got my own world to live through, And I ain't gonna copy you..." - Jimi Henrix This is 100% Napa Cabernet, best described as "voluptuous", with rich succulent blue fruit, sweet, massive mouthfeel, vanilla, coffee, and toffee.”

95 POINTS, "CLASSIC 95”
"Rich and voluptuous, with blue and black fruit blackberry on the nose with hints of cassis and vanilla. On the palate it’s dense with pretty espresso bean, cassis, pencil and chocolate with a cigar notes lead to an opulent, soft and silky finish. Just gorgeous. An explosion of style and class. This inaugural release of truly does taste like most of the $100 Napa Cabernet we’ve sampled recently so, at only $44.99, it’s an early contender for Boutique Bargain of the Year!”
Dean & Deluca
“This is a GREAT price for a really good Cab. Most of the fruit for this bold, concentrated Cab comes from Coombsville (Southern part of Napa) and Sugarloaf Mountain in the Napa Valley. Jonathan Maltus, vintner and winemaker, is most known for his cult winemaking status as a garagiste in St. Emilion at Chateau Teyssier. He's now producing some really compelling offerings in the Napa Valley - this is one of his efforts and aptly named after the Jimi Hendrix song." - Kerrin Laz, Wine Director
The Wine Enthusiast
"This interesting Cabernet was grown in various parts of the valley, but you can detect a cool-climate influence in the acidity and especially the tannins, which are firm and astringent. Yet the wine, which contains small amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, is remarkably ripe in blackberries, cherries and currants. Shows lots of elegance and complexity. Drink it over the next six years.”
Connoisseur's Guide to Californian Wine
"Starting out with a fairly complex nose of ripe cherries, currants, blackberries and caramel, this solid young wine stays right on track with like-minded flavors of expressive, deeply constituted fruit. As should be expected, it is still on the gruff and rather unrefined side but does not empty or dry out as its ample tannins come into play. It shows plenty of room for growth.”
Stephen Tanzer's Int. Wine Cellar
"(A blend from multiple sites): Bright ruby to the rim. Pure, reticent aromas of cassis, chocolate and crushed rock. Juicy, smooth and harmonious; not hugely complex but a very well-judged blend, with pliant black cherry, menthol and mineral flavors and a graceful, long finish featuring sweet, firm tannins. I'd give this a few years in the cellar.”
The wine is sourced from a number of different vineyards which all have something in common – they are from the classic valley floor, cool climate hill or mountain vineyards. Each element brings to the final blend different values – a richness from the valley and a raciness from the mountains.
Vinification is very similar to those wines that are made in France. After sorting – firstly by bunch and then, after the de-stemmer, grape by grape, a long cold soak before fermentation occurs. The wines undergo their malolactic fermentation in new and one or two year French oak, and are aged and are aged in the same oak.
IF SIX WAS NINE is The Estate’s biggest production from Napa. This is classic Cabernet Sauvignon from that variety’s Californian heart. As Robert Parker says about the wine “Time to turn on the music”!
