The First Englishman to make a 100 Point Wine

Jonathan Maltus has a cunning plan; but he needs to sell some wine in order to be able to achieve it. So he has approached us with a proposition for 67 Pall Mall members.

I appreciate that this email is a little more commercial than the tastings, dinners, Zalto & Coravin offers that I have sent you so far; so if this isn’t your thing, please accept my apologies and send it to the recycling bin - if not, read on.

Jonathan started in Bordeaux in 1994 with a small vineyard in Saint Emilion, which he has added to over the years, so that he now has 50 hectares under vines. He was early and significant in the garagiste movement with Le Dôme, a remarkable expression of Cabernet Franc that Robert Parker frequently rates in the top 90s; its crowning glory being to surpass the 99RP it was awarded in 2009 with the perfect 100RP in 2010. As Will Lyons of The Wall Street Journal and the Sunday Times commented ‘What Jonathan has achieved in Bordeaux is nothing short of remarkable’.

The received wisdom is that both Le Dôme and another of Maltus’ single vineyard wines, Vieux Château Mazerat (VCM), meet all the criteria for acceptance to become classified growths at the next Saint Emilion classification in 2022.  However, in order to meet size criteria Jonathan needs to construct a new winery.

Additionally, Jonathan is introducing Le Pontet - a collaboration between Jonathan, and two other of our Members, "WineChap" Tom Harrow and Nathan Hill of Honest Grapes, to bring to market a new single vineyard of just over a hectare on the plateau in Saint Emilion, surrounded by Cru Classés.  Le Pontet is his first new release since 2008, and is being offered on a limited basis.

The offer from Jonathan is in three parts.

1.   An allocation of one 12x75cl case of Le Dôme, Vieux Château Mazerat, Les Astéries and Le Pontet of the 2015, 2016 & 2017 vintages at a wholesale/trade price. (48 bottles per annum for three years)

2.   An exclusive invitation for up to two people to an annual Winemaker Masterclass at 67 Pall Mall hosted by Jonathan. This will consist of a tasting of the barrel samples of the next three vintages to be bottled followed by a Le Dôme dinner, as well as some previous vintages from the Maltus stable from Saint Emilion and Napa.

3.   A Château visit and tasting at Château Teyssier for up to two people.

Under this offer Jonathan is going to fix the case price for the next three years at the 2014 en-primeur ex-Château prices.

The Offer is one up-front payment of £9,000, which is payable now, with delivery of the wines in the 3rd quarter of 2017, 2018 & 2019.

NB this price is ex cellars Bordeaux, which means it doesn’t include VAT, Duty or delivery (which will be arranged at cost).
The market price of wine can fall as well as rise. The above is an offer from a third party, not 67 Pall Mall, and should not be construed as being investment advice, but an opportunity for an allocation of three vintages from four of Jonathan Maltus’ vineyards.

If you would like to receive an allocation in this manner please email, who will pass your details to Jonathan at Château Teyssier and Tom at Honest Grapes who will be in touch to send you the appropriate paperwork to complete the transaction.
